U.S. to Skip COP30 Climate Talks in Brazil

31 October 2025 at 04:22 pm IST

The United States will not send any senior officials to the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Brazil, a White House official told Reuters, underscoring Washington’s continued retreat from multilateral climate efforts. Brazil will host a high-level leaders’ meeting next week in Belém before two weeks of UN climate negotiations begin. The U.S. decision eases fears among world leaders that Washington might interfere with the talks. Earlier this month, the U.S. threatened visa restrictions and sanctions against nations supporting a United Nations shipping agency proposal to curb greenhouse gas emissions from maritime transport. The pressure prompted countries to delay by a year a decision on introducing a global carbon price for international shipping. The White House said President Donald Trump has already made his administration’s position clear, describing climate change as “the world’s greatest con job” at the UN General Assembly last month. Instead, officials said the administration is focused on bilateral energy trade deals to expand U.S. liquefied natural gas exports, including to China, South Korea, and the European Union. The U.S. remains on track to exit the Paris climate accord in early 2026 and has opposed global efforts to cap plastic production, signaling a continued shift away from international climate cooperation.
