US Judge Dismisses Youth Climate Lawsuit Against Trump’s Energy Policies

A federal judge in Montana has dismissed a lawsuit filed by youth activists challenging President Donald Trump’s pro-fossil fuel energy policies, ruling that the case sought to give the court an unworkable level of oversight over national energy regulation. The lawsuit, brought in May by 22 young plaintiffs represented by the nonprofit Our Children’s Trust, argued that Trump’s executive orders aimed at “unleashing” American energy violated their constitutional rights by exacerbating the climate crisis. U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen acknowledged the plaintiffs’ claims of harm from climate-related impacts such as wildfires, flooding, and air pollution, but said granting their request would require the court to “monitor an untold number of federal agency actions,” a role beyond judicial authority. Julia Olson, chief legal counsel for Our Children’s Trust, called the ruling “deeply disappointing” and vowed to appeal, saying, “Courts cannot offer more protection to fossil fuel companies than to young Americans seeking to preserve their future.” The Justice Department praised the decision, calling the lawsuit a “baseless attack” on Trump’s energy agenda. Trump’s policies, unveiled in January, seek to expand oil and gas production, roll back environmental protections, and withdraw the U.S. from global climate agreements. The case is part of a broader legal campaign by youth activists seeking to hold governments accountable for their role in accelerating climate change.
