The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its position as the top environmental performer in the Gulf and Africa, according to Agility Global’s latest sustainability report. The study, an update to Agility’s MEA Environmental Sustainability Scorecard, found that the UAE consistently outpaced its regional peers across multiple indicators, including government climate policy, infrastructure investments, and environmental governance. South Africa followed as the top performer in Sub-Saharan Africa. The report highlighted the UAE’s strong foundation in government-led green investment, innovation, and technology. It credited the nation for advancing climate financing regulations, expanding solar and nuclear capacity, and implementing net-zero reporting frameworks. The UAE also scored high in infrastructure and transport sustainability, thanks to its investments in EV charging networks, mass transit, and cleaner port systems. Significant progress was made in areas like mangrove conservation, air quality, and waste management—with 2024 marking the nationwide ban on single-use plastics. Despite its government’s leadership, the report noted that the UAE’s private sector still had room for greater innovation and capital investment in sustainability. However, the country was commended for promoting public–private collaboration, including initiatives like its green hydrogen pilots and the Catalyst startup accelerator. The report also cited government estimates suggesting that the green energy transition could attract AED 600 billion in new investment, generate 160,000 jobs, and increase exports by AED 25 billion. Agility Global’s commitment to the region’s sustainability goals was further demonstrated at COP28, where it joined 13 other businesses under the World Economic Forum’s “Leaders for a Sustainable MENA” pledge. With two of its major subsidiaries, Menzies and Tristar, already committed to net-zero targets, and pioneering “zero-carbon ready” logistics parks in the GCC and West Africa, Agility’s findings underscored the UAE’s ambition to become a global model for climate-forward economic transformation.
