Trump Administration Reopens Alaska’s Arctic Refuge to Oil and Gas Drilling

The Trump administration has moved to reopen the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska for oil and gas exploration, reversing restrictions imposed under former President Joe Biden and reigniting a decades-long battle over one of America’s most pristine ecosystems. The Interior Department announced on Thursday that it will allow leasing across the refuge’s entire 1.56-million-acre Coastal Plain, a region that could hold up to 11.8 billion barrels of recoverable oil. The decision restores seven oil and gas leases to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) that were canceled by the Biden administration in 2023, following a federal court ruling that said the cancellations were unlawful. “By reopening the Coastal Plain and advancing key infrastructure, we are strengthening energy independence, creating jobs, and supporting Alaska’s communities,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy called the move “historic,” praising President Trump for “delivering on promises made to Alaska.” The ANWR, a 19-million-acre wilderness critical to polar bears, Porcupine caribou, and migratory birds, has long been at the center of fierce debate. While state officials and tribal corporations see development as a boon for jobs and revenue, conservationists argue that drilling would devastate one of the planet’s most fragile ecosystems. “Opening the entire coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge to drilling would destroy one of the most ecologically significant landscapes on Earth,” warned Kristen Miller of the Alaska Wilderness League. Despite the green light, energy companies have shown limited interest — none submitted bids in last year’s auction under Biden. Still, the Trump administration says the reopening marks a cornerstone of its agenda to boost domestic energy production and reduce reliance on foreign oil.
