Thailand Sets the Pace for Sustainable Aviation in Asia

04 August 2025 at 03:28 pm IST

By mid-2025, Thailand emerged as a regional leader in sustainable aviation by accelerating the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The country’s Department of Energy Business developed a national SAF standard aligned with ASTM D7566 guidelines, reinforcing its commitment to carbon reduction in the aviation sector. This standard was a major step in Thailand’s broader climate action agenda and aligned with global efforts to decarbonize the aviation industry. Thailand worked closely with airline partners to ensure that local SAF production facilities met international requirements. The initiative aimed not only to reduce aviation emissions but also to position Thailand as a key player in the Asia-Pacific SAF ecosystem. Public consultations and industry engagement were conducted to shape the SAF framework and make it inclusive, forward-thinking, and investment-ready. The government’s actions coincided with a global push toward SAF deployment, supported by ICAO’s ACT-SAF program and Finvest Hub, which helped secure funding for SAF infrastructure. Thailand’s participation in regional collaborations with countries like Malaysia and Singapore further strengthened the local supply chain and demonstrated a joint ambition to scale up sustainable fuel production using domestic feedstocks. These collective actions underscored Thailand’s leadership in shaping a greener aviation future. By prioritizing sustainable fuels, engaging in international partnerships, and aligning with global standards, the nation laid a strong foundation for a low-emission aviation ecosystem—supporting both its national climate targets and the global goal of net-zero aviation emissions by 2050.
