Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that India’s economic growth should not come at the cost of the environment, describing sustainability as “non-negotiable” for the country's progress. Speaking at the International Electrotechnical Commission General Meeting Exhibition in New Delhi, he highlighted that harmonized global standards would enhance product quality, boost free trade, and promote international cooperation, ultimately supporting consumer welfare and long-term growth. Goyal explained that the government is working in “mission mode” to foster a culture of quality in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Zero Defect, Zero Effect” vision. This approach focuses on producing high-quality goods with minimal environmental impact. He pointed out that reforms like stricter enforcement through Quality Control Orders, such as in the toy industry, have improved safety and curbed substandard imports. The minister also reaffirmed India’s commitment to climate goals under the Paris Agreement, stating that efforts toward a circular economy and resource conservation are driven by conviction rather than external pressure. He stressed that focusing on quality leads to cost savings by reducing waste and improving efficiency, providing better value for consumers while supporting sustainable growth. Highlighting the role of the electrical and electronic industry, Goyal noted that energy efficiency and innovation in this sector are critical to climate action. He expressed confidence that India’s engineering expertise can pave the way toward a sustainable future and reiterated the government’s goal of earning global trust in Indian products. He concluded by urging international cooperation for harmonized standards that can safeguard the planet for future generations.
