Singapore has announced plans to establish its first National Space Agency (NSAS), set to begin operations on 1 April 2026, as part of a strategic effort to grow the city-state’s presence in the rapidly expanding global space economy. The move was unveiled by senior government leaders during the inaugural Singapore Space Summit, reflecting a broader ambition to leverage technological and scientific innovation for economic growth and sustainability outcomes. The NSAS will operate under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, taking over and expanding the functions of the existing Office for Space Technology and Industry. Its mandate includes strengthening national space capabilities, encouraging research and development, formulating supportive legislation, and fostering innovation and business opportunities in the space sector. Singapore is already home to dozens of space-related companies and a skilled workforce active in satellite technologies, advanced manufacturing and digital services — a foundation the government intends to build upon. Government officials and industry stakeholders have said that the agency will help Singapore capture a portion of the global space market, projected to reach approximately US $1.8 trillion by 2035, driven by increasing investment in satellite systems, space services, and related technologies. By coordinating national efforts and international partnerships, the NSAS is expected to boost research, support industry growth and position Singapore as a regional hub for space technology. In addition to economic ambitions, the new space agency is expected to support applications with sustainability benefits, such as environmental monitoring, climate data analysis and urban planning, where satellite imagery and geospatial analytics can provide insights to policymakers and natural resource managers. By integrating space capabilities with environmental and socioeconomic planning, Singapore aims to contribute to both technological advancement and sustainable development across sectors.
