Singapore has announced plans to step up investments in aviation sustainability and innovation capabilities as part of its broader strategy to future-proof the sector against global uncertainties and increasing environmental expectations. The country’s Civil Aviation Authority and industry partners are preparing a set of initiatives aimed at advancing green aviation technologies, sustainable fuels, and workforce capabilities. A central focus of the effort is on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) — a crucial pathway for lowering greenhouse gas emissions in air travel. Singapore has set a target for SAF to make up at least 1 per cent of jet fuel used on departing flights from 2026, with plans to scale this to 3–5 per cent by 2030 as availability grows. Alongside regulatory support, efforts are underway to facilitate voluntary SAF demand aggregation and supply commitments to help build a robust ecosystem. In addition to fuel strategy, Singapore is preparing partnerships and agreements to drive next-generation aviation technologies, explore decarbonisation approaches and enhance air navigation services. These collaborations are expected to connect governmental and private expertise to accelerate sustainable solutions in aircraft propulsion, operational efficiency and emissions reduction. Authorities also emphasise the importance of nurturing human capital and research talent to support aviation innovation, recognising that a skilled workforce and strong R&D base are critical to maintaining competitiveness. By strengthening sustainability capabilities and supporting innovation across the aviation ecosystem, Singapore aims to position itself at the forefront of global efforts to decarbonise air transport in an era of evolving environmental responsibility.
