Singapore’s Ministry of National Development (MND) and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) jointly announced the launch of the Urban Solutions & Sustainability (USS) Translation Fund, a S$40 million (approx. USD 29 million) initiative designed to help local companies commercialise research-based urban and sustainability innovations. The fund aims to reduce upfront capital barriers and de-risk commercialization for solutions that address national priorities in sectors such as the built environment, water, environmental services, and agri-food. National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat unveiled the programme at the Urban Solutions and Sustainability Research & Innovation Congress on Feb. 5, underscoring the government’s push to translate publicly funded research prototypes into cost-effective, market-ready products. Eligible projects must stem from publicly funded research, already have a working prototype, and demonstrate a clear commercialisation pathway. In addition to the USS Translation Fund, the government is introducing a Streamlined Procurement of Research Innovations and Technology (SPRINT) programme to help qualifying innovators become approved vendors for government procurement, potentially cutting procurement timelines in half and expanding market access for sustainability solutions. The fund will be managed by the USS Innovation & Enterprise Office (USS IEO), hosted by A*STAR, and will coordinate with other agencies to engage technology adopters and suppliers. The announcement also coincided with complementary innovation efforts, such as updating Singapore’s Built Environment Decarbonisation Technology Roadmap — launched on Feb. 6 — identifying nearly 70 technologies and strategies to reduce carbon emissions in buildings. Together, these initiatives aim to accelerate adoption of sustainable technologies and strengthen Singapore’s domestic innovation ecosystem under the RIE 2030 research and enterprise plan.
