Saudi Arabia’s Visionary Leap into the Future

Saudi Arabia continued to push the boundaries of urban innovation with NEOM, its most ambitious mega-project aimed at redefining city living for the 21st century and beyond. Positioned along the Red Sea in the country’s northwest, NEOM is envisioned as a $500 billion smart city powered entirely by renewable energy, blending advanced technology with sustainable design. The project, which forms part of the kingdom’s Vision 2030 diversification plan, made significant progress across its flagship developments—The Line, Trojena, Oxagon, and Sindalah. “The Line” stood out as a revolutionary linear city stretching 170 km, designed to host 9 million residents in a zero-car, zero-emission environment, where everything is accessible within a five-minute walk. Construction accelerated in 2024–25, with multiple infrastructure phases underway, including AI-driven urban planning, autonomous mobility systems, and climate-responsive architecture. Trojena, the mountainous region set to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games, and Oxagon, the world's largest floating industrial hub, also advanced with major design and tech milestones. NEOM represented a bold reimagining of urban life—blending nature, technology, and human-centric design. While the scale and vision drew global admiration, experts also raised questions around feasibility, social adaptation, and sustainability outcomes. Nevertheless, NEOM positioned itself as a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s transformation and its aspirations to lead the future of livable, intelligent cities.
