Qatar Successfully Tests First Fully Autonomous eVTOL Urban Flight

17 November 2025 at 04:51 pm IST

Qatar has successfully conducted its first fully autonomous electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi flight — the first of its kind in the country’s urban environment. The unmanned craft flew between the Old Doha Port and Katara Cultural Village, operating without human intervention using an AI-enabled self-control system alongside advanced air-navigation technology. The trial is part of a broader plan overseen by the country’s transport authorities to examine the technical viability, safety, and regulatory readiness of autonomous air taxis in urban settings. Future plans include phased integration of eVTOL services into the national transport network, including necessary infrastructure upgrades and regulatory frameworks. Officials said this milestone aligns with long-term strategic goals for smart, sustainable mobility under the national development vision, aiming to reduce traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and offer fast, eco-friendly transport options for residents and visitors. The government expects that successful tests like this could pave the way for broader adoption of urban air mobility solutions.
