The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has launched the National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2025–2030 as part of Qatar’s ongoing efforts to protect its natural resources and promote sustainability. The initiative aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to achieving land degradation neutrality and ensuring long-term environmental balance. HE Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, underscored that desertification poses a growing challenge globally and locally, requiring collaborative action. The strategy is designed around six key outcomes, including ecosystem protection, sustainable resource management, vegetation restoration, scientific innovation, effective governance, and enhanced community and international cooperation. The framework will drive major projects such as rehabilitating terrestrial ecosystems, cultivating native plant species, establishing nurseries, and updating natural resource legislation. It also incorporates AI-based monitoring systems, smart agriculture technologies, and early warning systems to improve resilience against drought and land degradation. The Ministry reaffirmed that successful implementation depends on strong national partnerships, scientific research, and public engagement. The launch marks a pivotal step in Qatar’s leadership in combating desertification, safeguarding biodiversity, and ensuring a sustainable environment for future generations.
