The governments of Qatar and the United States have issued a joint warning to the European Union over its new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), saying that unless the bloc reconsiders parts of the law, reliable energy flows and investment into European industry may be at risk. The letter, submitted during the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) ministerial meeting in Doha, emphasises that the directive’s extraterritorial application and liability provisions could discourage international energy exporters from engaging with the EU market. They argue this may lead to higher energy and commodity prices and reduce investment in the region. The timing is significant: with Europe aiming to shift away from Russian gas and relying more on LNG imports from regions like the US and Qatar, tensions are rising between the bloc’s sustainability ambitions and energy-security needs. Any perception of risk for exporters could complicate supply flows at a critical moment.
