Oman has planted more than 1.2 million seeds of native tree species in the wilayat of Suhar as part of a large-scale environmental campaign aimed at expanding green cover and enhancing ecosystem resilience. The initiative was led by environmental authorities in North Al Batinah and forms part of broader national afforestation efforts. The campaign strategically leveraged recent rainfall, allowing seeds to benefit from improved soil moisture and increasing the likelihood of successful germination and long-term growth. Native species such as Samr and Sidr trees were selected due to their high adaptability to Oman’s arid climate and their ecological value. The initiative contributes to Oman’s wider goal of planting 10 million trees nationwide, supporting efforts to combat desertification, stabilise soil and enhance biodiversity. Expanding vegetation cover also plays a key role in improving air quality and strengthening natural carbon absorption capacity. Beyond environmental benefits, the campaign reflects a broader strategy of using nature-based solutions to address climate challenges. By aligning planting efforts with seasonal conditions and focusing on resilient native species, Oman is adopting a more effective and sustainable approach to land restoration. The initiative highlights the growing importance of ecosystem restoration in the region, as countries increasingly invest in afforestation and green infrastructure to build long-term climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
