Oman Expands Plastic Bag Ban to Protect Marine Ecosystems

02 July 2025 at 09:23 pm IST

Oman Entered Phase 3 of its Nationwide Plastic Bag Ban marking a significant step toward curbing plastic pollution and protecting marine biodiversity. The latest phase extended the ban to food stores, fruit and vegetable vendors, bakeries, confectionery shops, and gift outlets—building on earlier restrictions implemented across medical, fashion, and electronics retail sectors. The Environment Authority issued a powerful public statement warning of the grave ecological consequences of single-use plastic. Plastic bags, often mistaken for food by marine animals such as turtles, whales, and fish, have led to fatalities due to ingestion and entanglement. The Authority emphasized that plastic waste does not easily decompose and continues to pollute oceans and disrupt food chains for decades. This move followed earlier bans rolled out in July 2024 and January 2025, targeting sectors such as pharmacies, tailoring shops, and furniture outlets. By phasing in the ban across industries, Oman has steadily strengthened its stand against environmental degradation and demonstrated regional leadership in marine protection. In a clear message to the public, the Authority urged citizens to adopt sustainable alternatives. “Even a single plastic bag can cause lasting harm,” the statement read, reminding everyone that small actions—like switching to reusable bags—can collectively safeguard our oceans and future generations.
