The New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced a substantial investment of AU$26.2 million to accelerate the adoption of emerging clean technologies, reinforcing the state’s commitment to a low-carbon economy. This funding, part of the broader AU$275 million Net Zero Manufacturing Initiative, will support 13 diverse projects across NSW, fostering innovation and advancing these technologies from research stages to commercial deployment. The initiatives are designed not only to reduce emissions but also to create jobs, bolster local industry, and position NSW as a leader in sustainable technology. The range of funded projects highlights a broad approach to decarbonisation, spanning maritime and aviation efficiency, agriculture, energy storage, battery recycling, and solar energy innovation. Projects include the development of robotic hull cleaners for ships, the application of shark skin-inspired films to reduce aircraft drag, and on-farm systems for producing low-emission fertiliser. There is also ongoing work on converting agricultural waste into green hydrogen and ammonia, aiming for greater sustainability and self-sufficiency in rural regions. Additionally, pioneering efforts in battery technology are enabling cleaner lithium extraction and exploring the viability of battery recycling facilities to help reduce electronic waste. Each initiative is receiving between AU$400,000 and AU$5 million in public funding, with the expectation that milestones such as prototyping and real-world testing will ensure commercial viability by 2028. Beyond government support, these projects have attracted AU$46.9 million in private investment, reflecting growing confidence in NSW’s clean technology sector. The state’s strategy not only supports emissions reduction but also drives regional development and strengthens local manufacturing, with many projects based outside urban centres to ensure broad economic benefits.
