Norway Commits Nearly $3 Billion to Major Global Forest Protection Fund

Norway will invest about $3 billion in a new international forest conservation fund, marking the largest contribution yet to the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF). Announced during a leaders’ summit ahead of COP30, the pledge underscores Norway’s long-standing role as a top global donor for rainforest protection. The government confirmed it will provide up to 30 billion crowns ($2.99 billion) by 2035. The TFFF, proposed by summit host Brazil, aims to leverage public contributions to unlock significantly larger flows of private capital for forest protection worldwide. Brazil and Indonesia have each committed $1 billion, and Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said the fund could feasibly secure $10 billion in public contributions within its first year. Ultimately, policymakers envision the TFFF as a $125-billion endowment-style fund that pays countries annual stipends based on how much tropical forest they keep standing — creating long-term, performance-based incentives for conservation.
