New York State has announced $18 million in new funding through its Climate Smart Communities (CSC) Grant Program, providing municipalities with additional resources to tackle climate risks, reduce emissions, and strengthen community resilience. The funding, administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), will support local projects aimed at addressing flooding, improving air quality, preparing for extreme weather, and advancing clean energy solutions. According to DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton, the program is designed to help communities reduce pollution, protect natural resources, and build long-term climate resilience while supporting affordable and efficient energy transitions. Of the total funding, at least $17 million will be available for implementation projects, with grants ranging from $35,000 to $2 million. Eligible initiatives include reducing vehicle emissions, cutting food waste sent to landfills, lowering refrigerant-related emissions, restoring natural ecosystems, protecting infrastructure from future flooding, expanding renewable energy use in municipal facilities, and preparing communities for heatwaves and severe weather events. An additional $1 million will support planning, inventory, and assessment projects that help local governments advance Climate Smart Communities certification efforts. These grants will focus on greenhouse gas reduction, transportation planning, climate adaptation, and sustainable land-use strategies. The program has also expanded eligibility to include local public authorities, public benefit corporations, and Indigenous Nations, a move intended to increase participation and improve access to funding for disadvantaged communities. The announcement aligns with New York’s broader climate strategy, which includes a record $1 billion Sustainable Future Program in the 2026–27 state budget, alongside significant investments in environmental protection, clean transportation, and renewable energy. With more than 470 local governments already participating in the Climate Smart Communities initiative, New York is continuing to position municipalities at the center of its climate action efforts, empowering communities to implement practical solutions while advancing the state’s long-term clean energy and resilience goals.
