New Report Urges Stronger Integration of Europe’s Sustainability Policies

04 March 2026 at 10:49 pm IST

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network released the 2026 edition of the Europe Sustainable Development Report (ESDR), urging European countries to better integrate their sustainability agendas to accelerate progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report warns that momentum on several environmental and social targets has slowed across Europe, highlighting the need for stronger coordination among national governments and EU institutions. The analysis found that no European country is currently on track to achieve all 17 SDGs, with particular challenges in areas such as climate action, responsible consumption, life below water, life on land, and food security. While Nordic countries including Finland, Sweden, and Denmark continue to lead sustainability rankings, the report states that every country in the region faces significant difficulties in meeting multiple goals. Researchers also highlighted growing governance and social challenges affecting sustainability progress. The report notes declining public trust in governments across parts of Europe and warns that political emphasis on the SDGs has weakened in recent years. It also found that approximately 40% of greenhouse-gas emissions linked to the European Union are generated abroad through trade, reflecting the environmental impacts embedded in global supply chains. To address these gaps, the report calls for a system-wide, cross-sectoral approach that aligns economic, environmental, and social policies across Europe. Experts contributing to the report, including Professor Phoebe Koundouri, emphasised the need for clearer financing strategies, stronger governance of global supply chains, and better integration of natural capital into economic decision-making to ensure the region remains on track to meet sustainability targets by 2030 and mid-century.
