Malaysia is accelerating the adoption of rooftop solar systems as part of its response to the ongoing global energy crisis, which has raised concerns over supply stability and rising electricity costs. The government, through the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), is promoting the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) to reduce dependence on grid electricity and improve energy resilience. The Solar ATAP programme, launched in January 2026, encourages households and businesses to generate their own electricity through rooftop solar installations. By enabling self-consumption of solar power, the initiative aims to help consumers lower electricity bills while reducing exposure to volatile energy prices driven by global disruptions. To support adoption, the government is facilitating financing mechanisms such as solar leasing and rent-to-own schemes, allowing users to install systems without significant upfront costs. Authorities are also working to expand access to the programme, particularly for residential users, to ensure broader participation in the energy transition. In addition to solar adoption, the government is encouraging energy efficiency measures, including optimising electricity use and adopting energy-saving practices. Together, these efforts form part of Malaysia’s broader strategy to enhance energy security, affordability, and sustainability while reducing reliance on fossil fuels amid global market uncertainty.
