As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Malaysia advanced regional integration and sustainable growth, emphasising inclusivity and resilience amid global trade uncertainties. At the ASEAN Senior Economic Officials’ Meeting (SEOM 3/56) on August 21, Malaysia highlighted ASEAN’s potential as a hub of innovation, digital adoption, and creativity, backed by a population nearing 700 million, one-third of whom are youth. Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) stressed that ASEAN’s demographic dividend and expanding consumer base could shape the future global economy if developed with sustainability and inclusivity at its core. The chairmanship placed special focus on strengthening supply chain resilience, promoting sustainable and responsible investment, and accelerating digital innovation. Under its leadership, Malaysia committed to ensuring that businesses of all sizes—particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)—were integrated meaningfully into ASEAN’s growth journey. This approach aimed to enhance opportunities across the region and support long-term equitable development. Key discussions at SEOM 3/56 also covered Malaysia’s priority economic deliverables, ASEAN’s 2025 Annual Priorities, progress on regional agreements, the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, and ASEAN’s sustainability agenda—including carbon neutrality, circular economy, and the ASEAN Power Grid. These efforts reinforced Malaysia’s vision of a future-ready, sustainable, and interconnected ASEAN.
