Malaysia and Japan have agreed to strengthen cooperation on energy security, energy transition initiatives and resilient supply chains during talks between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo. The two countries pledged to deepen collaboration across a range of strategic sectors, including energy, critical minerals, advanced technologies and economic development. The discussions also covered efforts to enhance supply chain resilience and support long-term energy security amid growing uncertainty in global energy markets. As part of the cooperation, Malaysia’s state energy company Petronas signed an agreement with Japan’s JERA to supply up to two million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually over a 20-year period beginning in 2028. The agreement is expected to support stable energy supplies for Japan while strengthening bilateral energy ties. The leaders also discussed cooperation on critical minerals and emerging industries, recognising their importance in supporting industrial development, clean energy technologies and supply chain resilience. In addition, both sides agreed to advance collaboration in areas including environmental sustainability, maritime safety and economic innovation. The agreements form part of broader efforts by Malaysia and Japan to strengthen strategic cooperation while supporting secure energy supplies and sustainable economic development.
