Kuwait is intensifying its efforts to combat desertification and land degradation as environmental authorities advance projects aimed at restoring ecosystems and improving long-term environmental resilience. The country's Environment Public Authority (EPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing measures that address one of Kuwait's most pressing environmental challenges. The initiatives form part of Kuwait's national land degradation strategy, which seeks to reduce the extent of degraded land through afforestation, desert rehabilitation and improved natural resource management. Authorities have identified desertification as a growing threat to biodiversity, food security, public health and economic development, particularly as climate change and human activities continue to place pressure on fragile ecosystems. Among the measures being implemented are tree-planting programmes, habitat restoration projects and efforts to expand protected natural areas. The EPA has also highlighted projects such as mangrove and drought-resistant tree planting to stabilize soil, reduce erosion and support biodiversity while strengthening ecosystem resilience. Officials have emphasized that combating desertification requires a combination of environmental protection, public awareness and sustainable land management practices. Kuwait is also continuing to align its efforts with international commitments under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification as it works to restore degraded land and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
