India has designated Deendayal Port in Gujarat, V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu, and Paradip Port in Odisha as green hydrogen hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced. The move aims to strengthen India’s clean energy transition by building an integrated hydrogen ecosystem. The National Green Hydrogen Mission seeks to make India a global leader in green hydrogen production, consumption, and export. Large-scale hydrogen hubs are envisioned as central nodes for production and industrial use, creating a sustainable and competitive hydrogen economy. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the strategic importance of ports in driving innovation and supporting sustainable logistics. The mission adopts a cluster-based development model to address early-stage challenges in hydrogen transport and infrastructure. Updated guidelines allow MNRE to recognize hydrogen hubs without direct financial assistance, while enabling them to access incentives under other central and state schemes. This approach aims to enhance project viability, optimize infrastructure, and achieve economies of scale. The selection of these three ports is expected to attract industrial investment, promote innovation in clean fuel technologies, and accelerate India’s net-zero ambitions by 2070. Officials said the initiative will support energy self-reliance, expand the use of green fuels, and position India competitively in the global energy transition.
