India Marks Record Renewable Energy Expansion in 2025

30 December 2025 at 06:30 pm IST

In 2025, India marked a historic increase in its renewable energy capacity, adding a record 44.5 GW of clean energy between January and November — nearly double the additions from the same period last year. This milestone was confirmed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reflecting strong government efforts to expand renewable infrastructure and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The surge was largely driven by solar power, which contributed the majority of the new capacity, significantly boosting the country’s overall installed solar base. Wind energy also registered notable growth, helping diversify India’s renewable mix and ensure more balanced clean-energy development. With these additions, India’s total renewable energy capacity reached approximately 253.96 GW by November 2025, while the broader non-fossil fuel energy capacity — including renewables, hydro, and nuclear power — climbed to 262.74 GW. This means that more than half of the nation’s total electricity capacity now comes from clean sources, positioning India ahead of its Paris Agreement commitments. The achievement underscores the government’s commitment to its energy transition goals and its target of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. Strategic policies, investment incentives, and flagship clean energy schemes have played key roles in accelerating capacity additions and advancing India’s long-term sustainability agenda.
