India has introduced a new initiative to develop a sustainability certification framework for exports, aimed at helping Indian exporters comply with evolving environmental and ESG regulations in key markets such as the European Union and the United Kingdom. The framework is designed to ensure that Indian export products can meet stricter global standards related to carbon emissions, environmental impact, and sustainability reporting, which are becoming increasingly important for trade access in developed economies. Under this system, exported goods are expected to be assessed and certified based on their sustainability performance across the supply chain, including factors such as energy consumption, emissions intensity, and environmentally responsible production practices. This will provide exporters with a standardized way to demonstrate compliance with international green trade requirements. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s export competitiveness by reducing compliance barriers and improving acceptance of Indian goods in regulated markets. It will also help align domestic industries with global sustainability expectations, particularly in sectors exposed to carbon-related trade rules. Overall, while it introduces additional compliance requirements for exporters, especially smaller firms, it is a strategic step toward integrating India more effectively into the global sustainable trade framework and enhancing long-term export resilience.
