Pralhad Joshi, India’s Minister for Renewable Energy, has urged the wind-energy industry to increase localisation of equipment and components in wind projects to 85% — up from the current 64%. The appeal was made at the 7th edition of Windergy India in Chennai, where he emphasised the role of wind energy in boosting India’s energy self-reliance (“Aatmanirbharata”) and strengthening the clean-energy supply chain amid global uncertainties. India currently manufactures a significant portion of its wind-turbine components domestically, with over 2,500 MSMEs contributing to the sector. The government expects that the next ~46 GW of wind-capacity additions will largely be driven by domestic manufacturing under the Approved List of Models & Manufacturers (ALMM) policy framework. Looking ahead, Joshi stated that India has the potential to capture up to 10% of the global wind-supply chain by 2030, and possibly 20% by 2040, leveraging its manufacturing base and policy measures.
