Germany is supporting Cambodia’s efforts to strengthen battery recycling and electronic waste management through a sustainability initiative focused on circular economy development and environmental protection. The project aims to improve technical capacity, establish safer recycling systems and reduce pollution risks linked to growing battery and e-waste volumes. The initiative was highlighted during a meeting on May 26 between Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment and German representatives, where both sides discussed the BATTPRO project, which focuses on developing sustainable battery collection and recycling infrastructure. The programme also supports the development of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework to improve long-term waste management systems. Cambodian authorities said the project aligns with the country’s Circular Strategy on Environment 2023–2028 and supports national efforts to prevent environmental pollution, strengthen public health protection and advance green economy objectives. Officials also highlighted the importance of developing systems for managing waste from electric vehicle batteries and solar energy storage technologies. According to government estimates, Cambodia imports more than 400 tonnes of batteries annually, while only a small portion is currently collected for safe treatment and storage. Authorities have expanded battery collection points in public spaces and are continuing awareness campaigns to improve waste separation and recycling practices. German officials reaffirmed support for Cambodia’s environmental management and sustainable development goals, with both countries expected to continue cooperation on waste management, resource efficiency and circular economy initiatives.
