Germany Commits €1 Billion to Brazil’s Ambitious Global Rainforest Fund

Germany has pledged €1 billion over the next decade to Brazil’s new Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), a landmark global rainforest fund aimed at rewarding countries for protecting forests and penalizing those that expand deforestation. The announcement was made by Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva at the UN Climate Change Conference in Belém. The contribution will support President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s vision for a fund that could eventually scale to $125 billion, distributing an estimated $4 billion annually — nearly tripling current global forest finance. The TFFF relies on satellite monitoring to track forest protection and degradation, positioning it as one of the most data-driven conservation mechanisms to date. Norway has already committed $3 billion over ten years, while Brazil and Indonesia plan to contribute $1 billion each. Founding members span major rainforest nations including Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Governance will rest with an 18-member board split between donor and rainforest countries, with the World Bank initially serving as trustee. Up to 70 developing nations could qualify for funding, provided at least 20% of resources support Indigenous and traditional communities. Brazil hopes wealthy nations will seed the fund with $25 billion, with another $100 billion expected from private investors — excluding any fossil fuel–linked financing.
