European Commission Unveils First-Ever Strategies for Islands and Coastal Communities

11 June 2026 at 07:55 pm IST

The European Commission has adopted its first dedicated strategies for islands and coastal communities across the European Union. The two strategies aim to address the specific challenges faced by these regions while supporting economic development, climate resilience and environmental protection. According to the Commission, around 17 million people live on more than 4,000 islands across the EU, while approximately 95 million people reside in coastal areas across 22 member states. The strategies were developed to address issues including climate change, demographic decline, connectivity challenges, marine pollution and pressures from tourism. The strategy for islands focuses on strengthening local economies, improving connectivity, supporting sustainable tourism and digitalisation, accelerating decarbonisation and renewable energy deployment, and enhancing climate adaptation and biodiversity protection. It also includes measures to improve access to public services, healthcare, housing and education while strengthening resilience against natural disasters and other emerging risks. For coastal communities, the Commission has identified three priority areas: prosperity, resilience and liveability. The strategy aims to support a competitive and diversified blue economy, encourage innovation and job creation, improve adaptation to climate change and environmental challenges, and promote inclusive and attractive coastal areas while safeguarding maritime heritage and local identities. The Commission stated that the strategies will promote locally tailored solutions that reflect the diverse circumstances of different islands and coastal regions. Both initiatives are intended to work together to address shared challenges while responding to the distinct needs of each territory across the European Union.
