European leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 17, 2026, discussed strengthening cooperation on sustainability, clean energy and economic resilience during the European Round Table for Industry in Gothenburg, Sweden. The discussions focused on building stronger Europe-India ties amid rising global concerns around climate change, supply chain security and energy transition. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson highlighted the importance of deeper collaboration with India in areas including green industrial transformation, advanced manufacturing, digital innovation and sustainable infrastructure. Leaders also explored opportunities to accelerate climate action and expand investments in renewable energy and emerging technologies. During the visit, India and Sweden elevated bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership and adopted a Joint Action Plan for 2026-2030. The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in climate initiatives, innovation, trade, defence and green transition projects. Prime Minister Modi said India and Europe can together become “strong pillars of stability, sustainability and shared prosperity.” The meetings also resulted in the announcement of an India-Sweden Science and Technology Centre to support joint research and development in climate technologies and sustainable solutions. Leaders noted that stronger Europe-India cooperation could help accelerate scalable solutions for global sustainability challenges.
