The European Commission (EC) has launched a new strategic framework for a competitive and sustainable bioeconomy across Europe. The initiative aims to accelerate the transition from fossil-based materials to bio-based solutions by scaling up innovations, supporting investments, and simplifying regulations. Under the strategy, bio-based materials — such as chemicals, textiles, bioplastics, construction materials, bioenergy and other bio-derived products — are being promoted as key components of a circular, sustainable economy. The plan also emphasises sustainable sourcing and efficient use of biomass, whether from forests, agriculture, aquatic resources or organic waste, to reduce environmental impact. The strategy sets out to foster green-industry growth, support businesses (especially small and medium-sized enterprises), and create new jobs by converting biological resources into valuable products. It aims to harness biotechnology and biomanufacturing to strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness while advancing environmental goals like carbon neutrality, circular production, and biodiversity protection. By aligning sustainable resource use, industrial innovation, and environmental protection, the strategy positions the bioeconomy as a cornerstone of Europe’s economic and climate-resilience plans. Changes in policy, investment, and market demand are expected to unlock a broader shift toward cleaner technologies and greener industries.
