On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day in New Delhi, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the urgent need for energy-efficient practices, calling energy conservation “not just an option, but the most crucial need of today.” While presenting the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025 and prizes for the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation, she described energy conservation as the most environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy, emphasizing the importance of using energy wisely, responsibly, and efficiently rather than merely reducing consumption. President Murmu outlined practical measures for energy savings, including limiting unnecessary use of electrical appliances, adopting energy-efficient devices, utilizing natural light and ventilation, and promoting solar and renewable energy options. She stressed that these steps not only reduce carbon emissions but also help maintain clean air, safe water sources, and a balanced ecosystem. The President highlighted the role of children and youth in raising awareness and achieving national energy goals for sustainable development. She further emphasized that access to affordable and clean energy strengthens communities, stimulates local economies, and creates new growth opportunities. Green energy, she noted, extends beyond electricity generation, serving as a tool for empowerment and inclusive development. President Murmu praised initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aim to reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels. Citing official data, the President said India’s energy efficiency measures during 2023–24 resulted in savings of 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent, leading to significant economic and environmental benefits. She stressed that the success of India’s energy transition relies on active participation from all sectors and citizens, calling for behavioural changes to improve energy efficiency across the country. Linking the message to India’s cultural ethos, she referenced the “Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)” initiative, emphasizing harmony with nature as a guiding principle for sustainable living.
