On 7 January 2026, Dubai Municipality, in collaboration with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), launched an ambitious initiative to plant 20,000 trees across parks, residential neighbourhoods and educational institutions throughout the emirate. The programme was announced as part of celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and community wellbeing. The initiative is designed not only to expand green spaces within Dubai’s urban environment but also to strengthen community engagement with environmental stewardship. A diverse range of tree species, including ornamental varieties and fruit‑bearing trees, are to be planted at key locations such as Al Barsha South, Al Barsha Pond Park, Nakheel Park in Al Aweer, the Quranic Garden in Al Khawaneej, Al Mizhar Second, Blossoms Park at Nad Al Sheba, Al Safa Park in Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz Pond Park and Al Warqa’a 3. This varied selection aims to enhance biodiversity and create greener, healthier neighbourhoods for residents. Senior officials from several government entities took part in the tree‑planting activities, symbolising cross‑sector support for the initiative. Participation from schools, universities, community volunteers and government representatives underscores the collaborative spirit of the campaign, which aims to promote environmental awareness and foster a culture of sustainability among younger generations. Strategic involvement from the educational sector ensures that students actively contribute to environmental goals and learn the value of ecological responsibility through hands‑on engagement. To bolster the long‑term success of the programme, the municipality will employ smart irrigation systems and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to optimise water use and ensure healthy tree growth, while a dedicated care plan, monitoring and community hotlines will provide ongoing support. The initiative is aligned with broader sustainability frameworks such as the Urban Environment pillar of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, reinforcing the emirate’s vision of integrating environmental protection into comprehensive urban planning and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
