Dubai entered the final phase of its progressive single-use plastic ban, extending restrictions to widely used items including plastic plates, cutlery, beverage cups and lids as part of nationwide efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability. The expanded measures build on earlier stages that began in 2024 with a ban on plastic bags and moved in 2025 to include items such as straws, stirrers and styrofoam containers, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to environmentally responsible consumption and waste minimisation. The ban is implemented under Executive Council Resolution No. 124 of 2023, which outlines a phased approach to eliminating various single-use plastic products and supporting the adoption of alternative materials. The authorities have also prepared guidance to help businesses and consumers transition to approved sustainable alternatives, encouraging the integration of reusable and biodegradable options into everyday life. Dubai Municipality officials say the policy aligns with broader national sustainability strategies and circular economy objectives, aiming not only to reduce plastic waste entering landfills and waterways but also to foster long-term responsible consumption habits among residents and visitors. The initiative forms part of the United Arab Emirates’ wider legislative framework, which includes a federal ban on the import, manufacture and trade of an expanded range of single-use plastic products that took effect in early 2026. The final phase of the ban is expected to have significant environmental benefits by cutting down on disposable plastic waste and encouraging more sustainable product design and usage patterns. By scaling back reliance on conventional single-use plastics, Dubai aims to support cleaner urban environments and contribute to national goals for reducing pollution and preserving natural resources for future generations.
