Denmark is advancing a new sustainability-focused agricultural strategy centered on oats, aiming to transform how crops are cultivated under climate pressures. The initiative is being driven through the AVENUE project, which brings together experts in plant genetics, agronomy, and data science to improve crop resilience and long-term food security. Oats have been identified as a key crop due to their naturally low environmental impact. They require less nitrogen input, are more resistant to disease, and perform well in organic farming systems, making them well-suited for sustainable agriculture in northern Europe. Denmark, already a global leader in organic farming, sees oats as a strategic crop for reducing agricultural emissions and improving resource efficiency. As part of the initiative, researchers are testing around 200 oat varieties sourced from Nordic seed collections to identify traits such as yield stability, climate resilience, and adaptability to changing environmental conditions. The goal is to develop improved oat varieties that can maintain consistent production despite seasonal variability and climate change impacts. Beyond resilience, the project also focuses on enhancing the nutritional value of oats, which are rich in fibre, protein, and essential nutrients. By combining sustainability, health benefits, and agricultural reliability, Denmark aims to create a new generation of “super oats” that support both climate goals and food system transformation, reinforcing the country’s leadership in sustainable agriculture innovation.
