The Canadian federal government is proposing major changes to how large energy infrastructure projects are reviewed, including shifting oversight of interprovincial pipelines, transmission lines, and offshore renewable energy projects from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to the Canada Energy Regulator. The proposal would reverse reforms introduced eight years ago that centralized national project assessments under a single agency. Ottawa is also considering allowing cabinet to determine whether pipeline projects are in the public interest before reviews are completed. The plan includes a new Indigenous consultation hub and measures aimed at cutting major project review timelines to just one year.
