California Air Resources Board (CARB) Chair Liane Randolph, a central figure in shaping the state’s climate policies, will retire on September 30, Governor Gavin Newsom announced. Randolph will be succeeded by Lauren Sanchez, Newsom’s senior climate adviser. Randolph has been instrumental in advancing California’s landmark plan to ban the sale of new gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, a policy now adopted by 11 other states representing a third of the U.S. auto market. She also oversaw the state’s roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, cut air pollution, and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, which now make up a quarter of new car sales in California. Her retirement comes as the state faces escalating clashes with President Donald Trump, who has sought to dismantle key environmental regulations. In June, Trump signed resolutions blocking California’s EV sales mandates and diesel engine rules. His administration has also sued California to halt enforcement of its strict truck emissions standards and rescinded billions in funding for the state’s high-speed rail project, a key emissions reduction initiative. Randolph criticized Trump’s rollbacks, saying they put “polluter fantasyland over proven science,” while California continues to battle climate-driven challenges.
