Britain has unveiled its first-ever onshore wind strategy, aiming to significantly boost renewable energy capacity and create thousands of new jobs. The government announced that this initiative is a key part of its broader plan to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2030, enhance energy security, and reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuels. Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized that expanding onshore wind is a practical choice, as it is one of the most affordable and rapidly deployable renewable technologies, supporting skilled employment and delivering clean energy directly to local communities. The new strategy outlines 40 specific actions to accelerate onshore wind development across the country. These measures include providing funding for community projects such as sports fields and libraries in areas hosting wind farms, repowering aging turbines, and streamlining the planning process for new installations. The government estimates that the strategy could help create around 45,000 jobs, while also attracting billions in private investment and establishing new supply chains nationwide. Currently, the UK has approximately 16 gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind capacity, with an ambitious target to increase this to 27-29 GW by 2030. Industry leaders have welcomed the strategy, noting that the outlined measures will boost investor and developer confidence, further supporting the country’s transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system
