In a bold step toward urban transformation, Bengaluru Airport City, India’s upcoming aerotropolis, was announced as a futuristic smart and sustainable city to be developed around Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The project, spread across 463 acres, was envisioned as a mixed-use development blending infrastructure, innovation, and entertainment, positioning Bengaluru as a global hub for smart urbanism. Over the next decade, the aerotropolis was planned to house business parks, a global innovation hub, an education and health district, as well as a retail-dining-entertainment village and a concert arena, creating a fully integrated live-work-play ecosystem. The initiative aimed to complement the expanding role of KIA, transforming it from a transport hub into an economic and cultural nucleus. A key feature already in operation was a 3D technology facility, functional since July 2022, showcasing Bengaluru’s commitment to technological advancement and future-ready infrastructure. The project aligned closely with sustainability goals, with planners aiming to build a city that is digitally connected, resource-efficient, and inclusive by design. While discussions on a potential second airport continued to address future air traffic needs, the current vision reaffirmed KIA's strategic importance not just as an airport, but as a gateway to a vibrant, green, and globally competitive urban model. The Bengaluru Aerotropolis was projected to redefine how airports serve cities—not just as transit points, but as engines of growth and innovation.
