The government of the Kingdom of Bahrain has announced a major solar power initiative totalling 123 megawatts-peak (MWp), which will include a single-site rooftop solar installation of approximately 50 MWp — described as the largest in the world to date. The rooftop portion will span about 262,000 square metres with around 77,000 solar panels deployed. The comprehensive project will also include several ground-mounted solar PV installations, bringing the full site’s footprint to about 707,000 square metres and over 189,900 high-efficiency solar panels. First-year generation is projected at roughly 200 million kWh of clean electricity, with an estimated carbon emissions reduction of 90,000 metric tonnes. This project aligns with Bahrain’s national clean-energy strategy and its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. By investing in industrial-scale rooftop solar capacity, the country is reinforcing both its renewable-energy ambitions and sustainability credentials.
