Australia’s Port Authority of NSW Earned Global Sustainability Recognition

21 August 2025 at 04:40 pm IST

The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) had strengthened its sustainability leadership by securing two major recognitions. It became the first Australian port certified under the international Green Marine environmental program and achieved Silver Partner status in the NSW Government’s Sustainability Advantage program. The Green Marine certification placed the Port Authority of NSW among a select group of global leaders in sustainable port operations. Its performance across six ports was benchmarked against strict criteria, including air emissions, water quality, waste management, community engagement, and noise reduction. Building on its Bronze Partner recognition in 2021, the authority’s Silver Partner status marked a step forward in embedding sustainability across its operations. Achievements included progress on Scope 1 and 2 net zero targets, disclosure of Scope 3 emissions, a climate risk assessment and adaptation plan, and enhanced data monitoring for continuous improvement. In addition, the Port Authority had invested in shore power infrastructure at the White Bay Cruise Terminal, a pioneering project in the Southern Hemisphere. This initiative would allow cruise ships to connect to renewable energy onshore, cutting emissions significantly. With a goal of achieving net zero by 2040, these milestones showcased NSW’s ports as frontrunners in advancing cleaner and climate-resilient maritime operations.
