Australian Energy Producers Advocated for a Sustainable Gas Future

Australian Energy Producers (AEP) announced a comprehensive set of recommendations aimed at strengthening domestic gas supply and ensuring long-term energy security. Central to their submission to the Gas Market Review was the proposal for a prospective gas reservation policy, designed to move Australia’s energy sector away from short-term fixes and toward sustainable, future-ready solutions. Chief Executive Samantha McCulloch underscored that natural gas would remain a critical component of Australia’s energy mix through 2050 and beyond. She highlighted that a strong, competitive, and well-supplied east coast gas market was essential for supporting both domestic energy security and international commitments. The recommendations focused on three priorities: implementing long-term gas market reforms, introducing a market-oriented reservation policy linked to new supply, and sunsetting temporary regulatory instruments. Additional measures included launching sustainable exploration programs, fast-tracking development-ready projects, expanding pipelines and storage capacity, and streamlining project approvals to attract fresh investment. By calling for greater collaboration between government, industry, and energy users, AEP emphasized the need to balance sustainability with reliability. Their strategy positioned gas not only as a cornerstone of Australia’s economic growth but also as a key enabler of affordable, stable, and sustainable energy for decades to come.
