Australia has launched a new sustainable tourism initiative, the Green and Gold Promise, aimed at encouraging responsible travel practices across the sector. Announced at the Destination Australia conference in Melbourne, the initiative calls on both businesses and tourists to play a role in protecting the country’s natural and cultural assets. The move comes as demand for sustainable travel continues to grow, with 77% of global travellers indicating that sustainability is important to their travel choices. The initiative builds on Australia’s National Sustainability Framework for the Visitor Economy and seeks to translate sustainability goals into practical, on-ground actions. At the core of the campaign are five guiding principles—Celebrate Community, Embrace Culture, Preserve Place, Respect Wildlife, and Take Care—designed to promote environmentally responsible and culturally respectful tourism. Tourism businesses are encouraged to integrate these principles into their operations and communicate them clearly to travellers. With over 360,000 tourism businesses across the country, the initiative positions sustainability as both an economic opportunity and a long-term strategy to safeguard Australia’s tourism appeal. By aligning industry practices with responsible travel messaging, the Green and Gold Promise aims to strengthen Australia’s global reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism.
