Australia Unveils FarmPrint Tool to Help Farmers Measure Environmental Footprint

24 February 2026 at 05:58 pm IST

On 24 February 2026, Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), launched a new digital platform called FarmPrint to help farmers measure, benchmark and report their environmental footprint, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. The tool was developed to support Australian agricultural producers as markets, lenders and supply chains increasingly demand credible sustainability performance data. FarmPrint enables farmers, agricultural advisers and finance-sector partners to compare individual farm performance against regional benchmarks and track changes in emissions over time. The tool’s analysis covers both on-farm emissions and those embedded in inputs such as fertilisers, chemicals and diesel, offering a cradle-to-farm-gate approach that aligns with evolving national and international reporting protocols. Dr Murray Hall, a senior research scientist at CSIRO who led the project, said field trials under real-life conditions had helped ensure FarmPrint’s accuracy and robustness. He emphasised that the platform’s development converts CSIRO’s digital agriculture research into a practical solution for sustainable farm management, enabling producers to demonstrate environmental performance to stakeholders and identify emission reduction pathways. The launch of FarmPrint represents a significant step in supporting the agriculture sector’s transition toward more sustainable practices, providing the tools needed for transparent reporting and helping Australian farmers respond to external pressures to reduce their environmental footprint. CSIRO plans to continue collaborating with the agricultural community to enhance the tool and expand its capabilities.
