Asia’s Clean Energy Goals Threatened by Coal Subsidies and Policy Instability

Industry leaders at the APPEC conference in Singapore warned that Asia’s transition to clean energy is under serious strain. Persistent subsidies for coal, unpredictable policymaking—such as cancelled renewables auctions—and inadequate investment in grid infrastructure are creating significant barriers to green energy investment, especially as surging power demand from data centers continues to rise. Executives noted that despite growing interest in renewables, the region’s reliance on coal remains politically motivated, aimed at keeping electricity prices low. This is particularly true in countries like Indonesia, India, and Malaysia. Such political choices are undermining investor confidence, delaying projects, and inflating financing and operational costs. Taiwan and India exemplify the problem—withdrawn tender processes including the revocation of wind and solar auctions highlight how regulatory uncertainty is choking off clean energy momentum. The message was clear: unless countries across Asia establish predictable, long-term policy frameworks, invest in grid modernization, and curb fossil fuel subsidies, the region risks derailing its clean energy ambitions during a pivotal moment of growing electricity demand.
