The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Malaysia have marked more than a decade of implementing the ASEAN Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS), a regional initiative focused on improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions across Southeast Asia. The milestone was celebrated during the AEMAS Energy Management Gold Standard (EMGS) Award Ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur on April 27, 2026. The event was hosted by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) under the theme “Celebrating Excellence in Energy Management: Advancing ASEAN’s Journey from AEMAS towards SAEMAS.” Malaysian organisations from sectors including healthcare, education, commercial buildings and public services were recognised for implementing structured energy management systems under the EMGS framework. Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup, attended the ceremony alongside Deputy Minister Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and senior officials from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA). Representatives from ACE highlighted Malaysia’s leadership in institutionalising energy efficiency, citing electricity savings of more than 60,000 GWh achieved under the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2016–2025. ACE officials also pointed to Malaysia’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2024 and the country’s National Energy Transition Roadmap as key drivers supporting long-term sustainability goals. Since 2010, Malaysia’s AEMAS programme has produced more than 2,400 certified energy managers and certified over 200 organisations under the EMGS framework, helping strengthen energy conservation efforts across the country and the wider ASEAN region.
