Abu Dhabi has announced the 95% completion of the first phase of its Environmental Centennial 2071 strategy, a long-term plan aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability and resilience for future generations. Spearheaded by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the initiative is built around key themes such as zero waste, climate-neutral development, and biodiversity conservation. The plan aligns with the UAE’s broader sustainability goals, including Net Zero by 2050, and positions Abu Dhabi as a regional leader in proactive environmental planning. The initial phase of the Centennial Plan focused on establishing a robust policy framework, incorporating circular economy models, enhancing natural capital accounting, and improving environmental data governance. The EAD has worked in collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure that policy development is evidence-based and geared toward long-term ecological balance. The agency has also adopted global standards such as the United Nations’ System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) and has built capacity for advanced data monitoring and reporting. In a related development, the EAD’s Plant Genetic Resources Centre has been awarded the prestigious LEED Gold certification, recognizing its excellence in sustainable design and energy efficiency. The facility is a cornerstone in Abu Dhabi’s environmental infrastructure, conserving native plant species and contributing to agricultural biodiversity. Together, these milestones reflect Abu Dhabi’s integrated approach to environmental stewardship, balancing innovation, policy, and conservation in its journey toward a sustainable 2071.
