UAE Sustainability Initiative Expands Solar-Powered Healthcare Access in India

The United Arab Emirates' Beyond2020 initiative has expanded access to reliable healthcare in rural India through the deployment of six solar-powered health facilities in Karnataka. The initiative, launched by the Zayed Sustainability Prize, combines renewable energy with energy-efficient medical technologies to strengthen healthcare services in communities with limited or unreliable electricity.

The facilities are equipped with solar photovoltaic systems generating between 2 and 15 kilowatts under peak sunlight conditions, supported by off-grid systems and lithium-ion battery storage capable of providing up to two days of backup power. This reliable electricity supply allows essential medical equipment to remain operational during power interruptions and supports services including maternal and neonatal care, immunisation, diagnostics and telemedicine.

The project is also improving access to healthcare for remote communities by reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to larger medical centres. More than 200,000 people are expected to benefit from the six facilities, while the deployment has also enabled healthcare workers to provide services closer to communities and strengthen emergency response capabilities.

Beyond2020 is designed to demonstrate how sustainable energy can address interconnected development challenges.

In India, solar power has helped health facilities redirect resources previously spent on diesel and electricity towards system maintenance, while reliable energy has supported vaccine storage and the continued operation of critical equipment.

The initiative has now completed 19 deployments across energy, health, water and food-related solutions, benefiting more than 429,800 people across multiple countries.

The India deployment highlights the role of renewable energy in strengthening both environmental and social resilience. By integrating clean power, healthcare technology, infrastructure and long-term maintenance systems, the UAE-backed initiative demonstrates how decentralised renewable energy can improve essential services while supporting sustainable development in underserved communities.
