Dubai has introduced a food recovery initiative to reduce waste from weddings and events by redirecting surplus food to people in need. The UAE Food Bank and Dubaiโ€™s Community Development Authority (CDA) have signed an agreement establishing a framework for the safe collection, transportation, and redistribution of excess food identified through the Dubai Weddings initiative.

The partnership aims to ensure that edible surplus food is put to beneficial use rather than discarded. All collection and redistribution activities will comply with approved regulations and food safety requirements, helping ensure that donated food is suitable for consumption.

Beyond food recovery, the agreement includes joint awareness campaigns and community programmes focused on food preservation, sustainable consumption, and responsible food management. Volunteer participation will also be encouraged to strengthen community engagement and support humanitarian initiatives.

Dr Ahmed Al Hashemi, chief executive of the CDAโ€™s Social Regulation and Services Sector, said the collaboration would extend the benefits of the Dubai Weddings initiative to the wider community. By recovering surplus food, the programme aims to encourage responsible consumption while making more efficient use of available resources.

Manal Obaid bin Yaroof, head of the UAE Food Bankโ€™s executive team, highlighted the partnershipโ€™s role in strengthening organised food recovery and distribution. The initiative is expected to expand the reach of food recovery efforts, conserve valuable food resources, and promote a culture of giving and social responsibility.

The agreement also supports the objectives of Dubai Social Agenda 33, which focuses on family and community well-being, alongside the UAE Food Bankโ€™s wider humanitarian mission. By combining government coordination, food recovery systems, and volunteer participation, the initiative connects waste reduction with food security and social impact.

As food waste remains a sustainability challenge, initiatives such as this demonstrate how coordinated action can help preserve resources while addressing community needs. For businesses in the hospitality and events sectors, effective surplus food management can be an important part of broader sustainability efforts.

Cognitud can help organizations identify opportunities to reduce resource waste, strengthen sustainable operational practices, and integrate environmental and social considerations into business strategies. Embedding food waste prevention and responsible resource management into operations can help businesses create measurable environmental benefits while contributing to wider community well-being.
